For those guys who doesn't know what Mumble is. Mumble is an open-source, low-latency, high-quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming.

I don't know if you are a Mumble developer or only a Mumble user but, for me, a program that need to be installed via an installer, it sound wrong.

I avoid intallers. I don't trust them bacause they write, change and, sometimes, remove files anywhere.

This is why I prefer protable programs.

P.S. : I know a program without installer, it sound amateur and lots of people never will trust it.

However, it isn't a reason to force the use of an installer

@asmanel, AssaultCube also provides an installer for Windows, but you can compile your own binary in the portable source code version.

It is possible that Mumble also has a source code package that can be compiled.

AssaultCube Reloaded releases portable versions just because it is easier to package and use.

Sorry for not reply before (actually, yesterday, I accidentally closed the tab where I wrote a reply and I just saw it wasn't posted)

The problem with installer is they write files in any location and often without any understandable reason.

On Windows, the system can prevent you from execute a program if you haven't the needed rights but, once started, It can write or change files anywhere. You can't set the system to allow a program to write in a folder and prevent it from writing in an other folder.

Mumble sources are available but, according to what I read, it need Visual C++ or Visual Studio to be compiled on Windows, and I don't know what it will make exactly (I fear it will make an installer).

In any way, most people don't know how to compile sources. For them, to say "if you don't trust the installer, you can compile the source", it's like to say "install the program with the installer or abandon the idea to use the program".

RE: Creating Mumble Server(Similar to TS3)
@asmanel, the strange thing is that many free software packages (like AC and Mumble) are distributed with only an installer. Some provide only portable versions (like ACR) or even both (software from Piriform). I remember that I packaged portable versions just because it is easier than packaging an installer.
